Clarke Cunningham established his Tree Surgery business
in 1984 and progressed to employ over 50 people, working
on both private and public sector contracts. To handle the
cut timber and waste generated by the tree surgery, Ballytrim
Sawmills was set up. The sawmill processed the better timber
as a saleable commodity, including the production of wooden
floors to order, whilst cutting the waste into firewood
and wood chips for sale to both private clients, garden
centres, councils and other public bodies.
In 2000 the Clarke Cunningham workshop was opened and quality
craftsmen were employed to make wooden furniture to individual
clients designs. The workshop quickly established a reputation
for high quality craftsmanship, making use of the quality
Native timbers.
The Tree Surgery business was sold in 2006, and although
it still operates from Ballytrim, it is no longer part of
the operation. Quality timber is now acquired from a variety
of sources, both local and European ensuring a wide range
is always available.
Ballytrim Sawmill manages the process of air drying and
kiln drying timbers as well as the actual processing of
the logs. The Sawmill also produces a range of freshly cut
or 'Green' beams from a variety of species and supplies
other raw timber products.
The Workshop utilises timber from the sawmill to make bespoke
furniture for both corporate and private clients. Boardroom,
dining room, kitchen tables and chairs, sideboards, wardrobes
and beds have all been designed and made in recent years.
Garden furniture, doors, gates, stairs and stair treads,
mirrors and picture frames are also amongst recent work.
